Looking at the history and development of tattooing through artist's eyes, we are constantly researching and practicing drawing skills to create unique and stylised designs.
Each day we study a different style in tattooing along with it's origins, techniques and subject matter. I paired these topics with a design principal to enhance knowledge and understanding on the tattoo designs. For example; when studying the history and origins, I taught students about pattern, its components and language.
This style of teaching was repeated with other tattoo styles and art elements or design principals ie; traditional style tattoos and composition, watercolour tattoo and colour theory.
Students explored the different styles of tattooing and expanded their drawing techniques. The aim is to encourage playful drawing exercises within the typical characteristics of each style and to develop a unique style for the artist.
Areas of art history and contemporary art appreciation was practiced daily.
Assessment
The assessment consisted of two submissions including a written exam and a final project proposal. I designed an assessment rubric with clear guidelines and success criteria forthe students.
I would design the questions on the written exam, give feedback during the project proposals and decide on a grade alongside the practical teacher of tattoo.
