Teaching Practice
Philosophy of Teaching Statement
“Creating artwork allows your mind to be in a safe place while it contemplates the tougher issues you are dealing with. One can use the tools of brush, paint, pastels, crayons etc to expose and even for a short time color those issues in a different light.” George E. Miller
I believe every student can equally benefit from artistic practice and should be encouraged to explore their own unique abilities, developing their creativity. Each student can find some form of artistic expression that appeals to them with enough encouragement, inspiration and understanding. When we hold high expectations for our students and help them to find their mode of expression, we build resilience, self-confidence and self-worth. Once students are guided to channel their own creativity, they have the opportunity to look deep within themselves, to be vulnerable and to process life's challenges. I believe all students should feel safe and heard within the learning environment whilst broadening their horizons on their ideas of what art is. Students who study art will build an appreciation and sensitivity towards their own ideal of beauty.
Within the study of art, my students develop an appreciation and deep knowledge of how creatives have exposed their perception of the world. Through discovery, they explore processes and refine their technique to express themselves and their own unique vision. All students have this ability within themselves, whether it is a child from a difficult home situation who has found peace with sculpting clay or a tech-savvy student who excels in product design. To encourage growth, my students are given responsibility and are held accountable for their choices. They learn to be respectful in communication towards their fellow students and the teacher whilst maintaining a safe and tidy classroom environment.
In developing responsibility and a respectful attitude, my students explore environmental, cultural and sociological issues in the world around them. We discuss biodiversity and the importance of caring for our precious landscape. We investigate issues such as waste and pollution, looking at figures and facts that need to be addressed. We challenge cultural and gender stereotypes while building a sense of empathy and understanding. In problem solving, students develop capabilities enriching their minds and their inner drive.
I passionately believe that each and every one of us have the ability to create something beautiful once we truly allow ourselves to access our core values. Learning in art builds skills that can be applicable in all aspects of life and in whatever career the students may choose.
My vision for my students is for them to flourish in the art room and leave feeling fully confident as a member of society.
