Post-Primary Teaching

I am a passionate educator and facilitator for creativity, exploration and expression. In post-primary schools I have taught clay, paint, embroidery and fabric manipulation, natural dyes, sculpture, mixed-media, music video making and print. Throughout student placement, I have also taught many classes other than Visual Art including History, Debate, SPHE and SEN.

Art teaching placements whilst training at university.

Rockford Manor Presentation School,
Blackrock, Dublin

''Rockford Manor is a non fee-paying Secondary School for girls which differentiates itself from other schools by catering for a wide range of social categories within the Catholic ethos of the Presentation Congregation.

The size of the school is unique in its catchment area enabling it to provide education of the highest quality in an intimate and caring environment where there is an emphasis on individuality and personal contact and affirmation.

In the school there is an emphasis on achievement and in this climate of excellence, improvement and success are not only rewarded, but celebrated.''

I carried out a biodiversity exploration and appreciation scheme with second years. The aim was to create a collaborative quilt using embroidery and natural dyes, using imagery based on our local landscape and colours of the seasons. The students investigated global goals, created seed bombs and reclaimed techniques that had been gender stereotyped. This was thoroughly enjoyed by the students.

I taught Visual Studies in 2021, just as the new framework had been released. I engaged the students in group work to decipher and summarise  each element of the framework. The students practiced analysing artworks using the elements and built a strong understanding of this new language of art. I set an analysis of an unseen artwork task and speech writing and debate delivery as a final assessment for this scheme.

A selection of worksheets, homework, assessment and success criteria for visual studies using the new framework elements.

Transition Year 'Body of Work'

Through working with Transition Year, I have created schemes involving small workshops in many areas of art including life drawing, sculpture, collaborative mark making, stop motion, abstract and expressive drawing practices, graphic design and collaborative design and curation to carry out a class exhibition.

Educate Together Secondary School Wicklow, 2021

"Our goal is to build a place where all students can engage with learning and reach their potentials. Students are encouraged to develop their creativity, critical thinking and collaboration skills through a wide range of subjects and co-curricular activities. The teaching staff promote the joy of learning and the benefits of lifelong-learning and aim to provide the highest level of instruction possible in the most varied ways possible - using iPads and Microsoft Teams as part of a technological approach, group work and projects as part of a collaborative approach, writing and speaking as part of an academic approach and reflection and feedback as part of a reflective and democratic approach."

During this placement I carried out lessons online and in person. I also worked in the unit teaching life skills and numeracy. This opportunity was very empowering for me as it really built my differentiation skills as well as my sense of empathy towards students with needs. I incorporated artistic processes into my lessons with creating mathematical art using a math set.

2nd Year Clay Vessel

When working with Junior Cycle, I have planned for CBA related schemes. This project studied deep sea creatures with many different resources. Students created functional vessels inspired by textures and colours found on the sea floor.
